The following actions will be performed during the project:

Action 1. Analysis and definition. Establishment of technical specifications
Duration: January – September 2010 (9 months)

The energy situation of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation building, and other buildings in Walqa Technology Park, will be analysed in the initial phase to define the resources for the integration and implementation of sustainable technologies, which will result in a 100% sustainable technology park in the future.

Action 2. Renewable energy production. Authorisations and permits

Duration: July 2010 – December 2011 (18 months)

The detailed renewable energy installation design will be produced in the second phase, with infrastructure based on photovoltaic and thermal solar energy to meet the thermal consumption needs of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation building. The permits and licences needed for this type of installation will also be obtained.

Action 3. Renewable hydrogen production

Duration: January 2011 – September 2012 (21 months)

This action will define, design and implement an appropriate hydrogen production system to meet the demands of all the project installations, and will manage to improve the hydrogen generation capacity.

Action 4. Hydrogen infrastructure

Duration: July 2011 – March 2013 (21 months)

This action will consist of the assessment, description and implementation of a hydrogen distribution system suitable for the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation building, and it will assess the hydrogen supply capacity, amount and pressure for the various applications.

This action will be performed in parallel to actions 3, 5 and 6 due to the direct connection between production, distribution and the final use of the hydrogen.

Action 5. Sustainable mobility

October 2011 – June 2013 (21 months)

This point starts the implementation and tests of two sustainable mobility applications:

– Integration of two fuel cells with varying power level in commercial electric vehicles
– Having a fleet of 20 electric bicycles with a 250 W fuel cell at the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation facilities for the use of Walqa Technology Park personnel

Action 6. Sustainable applications in the building

Duration: July 2010 – September 2013 (39 months)

This action’s main objective is to design and implement a backup and cogeneration energy system based on hydrogen technologies (fuel cell integration).

Cogeneration system: integration of a 5 kW cell in the building with thermal solar panels, and with an installation consisting of a 400 W wind turbine, concentrated solar panels, battery banks, polymer electrolyzer and storage in hydride form. The system will produce electric energy, and the heat given off can be used for hot water production and even for heating. The objective is to avoid and/or reduce the current propane consumption.

Back-up system Integration of 5 kW PEM fuel cell to guarantee back-up energy for the daily security copies to be made in the Hydrogen Foundation. The system will connect to the hydrogen network at 32 bar pressure (Action 4).

The purpose is to show the feasibility and benefits of this action so that other buildings incorporate this type of technology.

Action 7. Scenarios and improvements

Duration: October 2011 – September 2013 (24 months)

This action tests the facility in various situations, and designs an improvement and expansion plan aimed at possible increases in demand.

This affects the following aspects:

– Operation and maintenance of the renewable energy infrastructure and hydrogen storage
– Operation and maintenance of the fleet of vehicles
– Monitoring and analysis of results
– Operation and maintenance of the integration of hydrogen technologies in the Foundation building

Action 8. Project management and monitoring

Duration: January 2010 – December 2013 (48 months: the entire duration of the project)

This action refers to the need to optimise project management by allocating resources, and monitoring, checking and validating the results obtained.

Action 9. Project dissemination plan

Duration: January 2010 – December 2013 (48 months: the entire duration of the project)

New hydrogen technologies need to be disseminated among society at large. Consequently, this action focuses on dissemination, communication and training activities to reach the general public, and, specifically, the scientific community, the industrial sector, technology parks, and the main European agents.
